About Miniature Donkeys
Miniature Donkeys are not bred down from standard size donkeys, but are a breed of their own. They are native to the Mediterranean Islands. One of the first people to import them into the United States was Mr. Robert Green, a NY stockbroker, who acquired them during the late 1920's for his family. They are hardy, healthy animals, easy to care for on minimal land space. They do require loving homes and will become a loyal companion and friend for life to those who own them. They are gentle enough to be around children and the elderly. Miniature donkeys have a long lifespan of 25-35 plus years and jennets can usually reproduce into their late teens and sometimes twenties. For continued good health, they need room to run and play, preventative vaccinations and regular worming. Their hooves should be trimmed on a regular basis, depending on how fast they grow, climate and soil conditions. It is important to remember that they are herd animals, therefore should never be left alone. A lonely donkey can become stressed, which is harmful to his health. They are happiest with another miniature donkey, or other herd animals. Ours coexist quite well with our Highland cattle. Miniature donkeys can be shown, pull small carts and ridden by children up to 100 pounds. They are frequently used in parades and nativity scenes, as well as visitors to nursing homes and schools. Probably the most enjoyment for us comes from their affectionate personalities. As we walk into the pasture, we are quickly surrounded by them as they seek our attention. They love to be petted and talked to, sometimes leaning on, or nudging us for more. We think our donkeys would readily climb into our laps if they could! It is relaxing and enjoyable to watch as they graze peacefully or frolic and run in the fields, heads held high, ears erect and feet kicking up as they play. There is nothing as heartwarming as a young, fluffy foal by the side of it’s mother. They are truly wonderful animals and loving members of our family.
